Steve Ervin – SVP, Head of FHA and Seniors Housing Finance – Berkadia: Steve Ervin, SVP and Head of FHA and Seniors Housing Finance is responsible for leading strategy of all HUD production of multifamily and healthcare lending.
Steve joined Berkadia in 2011 to relaunch a Seniors Housing and Healthcare Finance platform. He built a team that would grow lending volume from $50M in 2011 to over $3B in 2020. Under Steve’s direction, the Berkadia HUD production team has been ranked #1 in HUD production volume over the past several years and continues to be a thought and production leader in the HUD finance world.
Prior to joining Berkadia, Mr. Ervin ran the HUD group for Walker & Dunlop after its purchase of Column Guaranteed where he started Column’s HUD shop. He successfully built that group from the ground up to finance over $1B in HUD loans. He is an active participant in many HUD associations. He is a member of the HUD Eastern Lenders Association, MBA’s Multifamily Steering Committee and the Committee on Healthcare Finance. Prior to joining Column, he held positions as Deputy Chief Underwriter for Love Funding where he was responsible for oversight of all underwriting operations. Steve’s career has encompassed over 30 years of HUD finance experience in various roles as a contractor to HUD, a consultant, an underwriter and a banker.
Robert Warren – Head of FHA Underwriting – Berkadia: Bob Warren is Head of FHA Underwriting for Berkadia. Mr. Warren has over 25 years’ experience in the industry and has been involved in excess of $21 billion of closed HUD, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Conventional loans. Mr. Warren has been involved in all aspects of the HUD process during his career and has worked with HUD offices around the country. In 2012, he was involved in the financing of Coop City, at $621.5 million, the largest FHA Multifamily loan closed. Additionally, Mr. Warren served as Chief Underwriter for Wells Fargo Multifamily Capital from 2009-2016.
Mr. Warren has written articles for regional publications and has been a speaker or moderator at various industry conferences throughout his career. He currently serves as the President of Southeast Mortgage Advisory Council (SMAC), a HUD Multifamily lender group that works with HUD offices throughout the Southeast to improve the process of the Multifamily HUD Programs. He is a past Chair of the MBA FHA Insured Projects Committee and Vice Chair of the MBA Multifamily Council and is actively involved with the MBA in working with HUD to improve the FHA Insured Programs. He received his Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation in 1998.
Debbie VanHoosen – Chief Underwriter, Multifamily – Berkadia: Debbie VanHoosen is Vice President – Chief Underwriter at Berkadia, located in the Denver, CO office. Ms. VanHoosen has been with Berkadia since 2016 and was also with predecessors (GMAC Commercial Mortgage and Capmark) for two years. Prior to Berkadia Ms. VanHoosen’s roles included FHA Chief Underwriter at NorthMarq (AmeriSphere) and Associate Director of Underwriting at Mercy Housing, among others. Ms. VanHoosen has worked in real estate since 1992 and has experience in retail, affordable housing, assisted living, skilled nursing and multifamily projects. Ms. VanHoosen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting from the University of Colorado, Denver and a Masters in Real Estate and Construction Management from the University of Denver, she is also MAP and Lean Underwriter certified. Ms. VanHoosen is active in the Mortgage Bankers Association as an instructor for the FHA Multifamily Underwriter Training program, the MBA Affordable Underwriter training and is currently Vice-Chair of the MBA FHA Committee.
Terry Wellman – Chief Underwriter, Affordable – Berkadia: Terry Wellman is the FHA Affordable Chief Underwriter at Berkadia, based out of the Irvine, California office.
Wellman brings over 30 years of experience in the industry, including 20 years of affordable underwriting experience to Berkadia. Prior to joining Berkadia in 2020, he served as Senior Vice President – FHA Chief Underwriter at PNC Bank. In this role, he managed a team of six underwriters. Prior to this, he served as Vice President of Product Development at Precept Corporation, where he managed the development, implementation and expansion of new features for the commercial real estate finance website. He has also spent time with Situs Realty Services, Archstone Communities Trust and Bach Thoreen McDermott Incorporated. In addition, Wellman currently serves as the Chair of the MBA’s FHA Insured Committee and has served as the President for Western Mortgagee Advisory Council
