Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Mary Ann King, Co-Head of Institutional Solutions in Irvine, California. Since joining Berkadia, she has played a pivotal role in building the platform of investment sales advisors who specialize in institutional investment.

Like so many in commercial real estate, King’s career path has been anything but linear and instead grew from a fascination with how physical environments shape life experiences. This led her to join Moran & Company in 1983 where, over 38 years, she served as the Vice President of Acquisitions and Finance and Co-Chairman, respectively, generating nearly 45% of the $35 billion in apartment transactions handled.   

In 2021, King and her partner, Tom Moran, sold their investment sales business to Berkadia based on three key factors: leadership, or the “human context,” opportunity, and private ownership.  

“An acquisition by Berkadia gave Moran’s brokers access to the best mortgage banking platform in the country, we knew we could leverage each other’s relationships and help each other,” King said. “After a lifetime of working for a privately held company, I believed that Berkadia’s ownership structure, a privately held partnership between Berkshire Hathaway and Jefferies, would be the perfect cultural fit for my partners at Moran.” 

She added that the company’s available capital and commitment to growth for both partners in the ownership structure was a “unique opportunity that none of Berkadia’s competitors could access.”
