Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Underwriting Analyst, Judy Ellison, to learn more about her role at Berkadia, what part of her role she is most passionate about, and how Berkadia has accelerated her personal and professional development.
Describe your role at Berkadia
As an FHA LEAN Underwriting Analyst, I assist with evaluating, analyzing, and preparing loan applications for healthcare facilities, ensuring compliance with HUD’s requirements. My role acts as a support to the lead Underwriter on the deal so they can focus on the more complex and nuanced items, and I can learn from them as we go, it’s a win-win!
Collaboration is a key part of my role as well; we work closely with the mortgage bankers and closers to get the deals to the finish line. I am still fresh to the role and the team, having transitioned from GNMA delivery to underwriting in March of this year.
What part of your role are you most passionate about?
The team aspect of my job really motivates me. I grew up playing sports throughout high school, so I place a lot of value on good teamwork. I understand how important it is for the overall shared goal to do my part and to do it well, and the team I work with is amazing. They have been great at helping me adjust to the new role.
What excites you most about commercial real estate?
I am still new to the industry with this past April marking my third year with Berkadia and in commercial real estate, so it is all still new and exciting to me! Especially being a part of the LEAN team and knowing my efforts go towards the betterment of seniors’ housing and nursing facilities, which is so vitally needed in our communities, really adds a layer of fulfillment to my work.
When you’re not helping Berkadia move the industry forward, how do you spend your time?
Most of my free time is spent outside; I love gardening, hiking, fishing, and camping. In the winters, you might even catch me on a frozen lake here in Minnesota! Traveling is something I love as well; I will take any opportunity I can to travel and experience somewhere new.
How has your time at Berkadia helped to accelerate your personal and professional development?
When I started with Berkadia, it was simultaneously as I moved away from my hometown, Charleston, South Carolina. Between moving and switching careers, I went through a great deal of personal and professional development.
The leadership here at Berkadia has always been so supportive of career development, which has made a huge impact on my career. I had been interested in underwriting for many years before I began working here, and through supportive leadership, I was able to get the job I wanted. I am excited to see how my career continues to develop at Berkadia.
